Simple rules for building a family tree together.
FamilyStoryline is a tool your family uses to build a family tree, keep memories and stay connected. These Terms explain what each person is responsible for.
Effective: 24 August 2026
1. Agreement
By creating an account or using FamilyStoryline, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
2. What FamilyStoryline is
FamilyStoryline is a tool for building a family tree, inviting relatives, saving memories and stories, and understanding family relationships.
You are in control. You add your family information, you manage it, and you can delete it at any time inside the app. FamilyStoryline does not access, edit, verify or make decisions about your family tree or content.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to create your own account. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must agree to these Terms on your behalf.
A parent or guardian manages a younger child's profile. A child aged 13 or older with their own device can manage their own profile when their parent or guardian allows it and the rules in their location permit it.
4. Your account
You are responsible for your account and your sign-in device.
Do not impersonate another person, create an account in someone else's name, or use another person's account.
5. Your content, your responsibility
You are responsible for everything you add — photographs, stories, memories, relationship information and any other content.
Only add content you have the right to use. Do not upload content that is false, defamatory, harassing, infringing or unlawful.
You keep ownership of original content you create. By uploading content, you grant FamilyStoryline a limited, non-exclusive licence to store, display, sync and deliver that content solely to operate the app as you use it. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account.
6. Family information is not a legal record
FamilyStoryline is not an official record of parentage, inheritance, citizenship, legal identity or any other legal status.
Family history can contain mistakes, disagreements and different points of view. You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you add. FamilyStoryline does not verify family relationships or decide which version of events is correct.
7. Invitations
An invitation is a request to join. It is not permission to control the other person's information.
No response is not consent. A declined invitation does not create an account. For full details, read How Privacy Works.
8. Prohibited use
Do not use FamilyStoryline to:
- impersonate another person;
- gain unauthorised access to another account;
- harass, threaten, stalk, defame or abuse another person;
- upload content that is unlawful or infringes another person's rights;
- misuse a child's information;
- scrape, crawl or systematically collect family information;
- interfere with the security or operation of the app;
- use the service for fraud, spam or deceptive activity;
- use the service to build a competing product.
9. Enforcement and termination
FamilyStoryline may restrict, suspend or permanently terminate any account that violates these Terms, abuses the service, or harms other users, with or without notice.
You may delete your account at any time inside the app. For full details on what happens when you delete, read How Privacy Works.
10. Intellectual property
The FamilyStoryline app, website, brand, design, code and documentation are owned by FamilyStoryline or its licensors. You may not copy, modify, reverse-engineer, decompile or redistribute any part of the service.
Content you create remains yours. Content other users create remains theirs.
11. Third-party services
Features such as Google Drive backup, app stores and messaging channels use third-party services. Their own terms apply. FamilyStoryline is not responsible for third-party services, their availability or their handling of your data.
12. Service availability
FamilyStoryline works to keep the app available and secure, but the service is provided on an "as available" basis. We strongly recommend enabling Google Drive backup in Settings to keep a personal copy of your data in your own Google account.
13. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless FamilyStoryline, its officers, directors, employees and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities and expenses (including legal fees) arising from:
- your use of the service;
- content you upload or share;
- your violation of these Terms;
- your violation of any law or the rights of another person.
14. Disclaimer of warranties
The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
FamilyStoryline does not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that any data will be preserved. You are responsible for maintaining your own backup.
15. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, FamilyStoryline shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, including loss of data, profits, goodwill or opportunity, arising from your use of or inability to use the service.
FamilyStoryline's total aggregate liability for any claim shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid to FamilyStoryline in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) fifty US dollars (US $50).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In those jurisdictions, liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.
16. Dispute resolution
If you have a dispute, contact us first at support@familystoryline.com. We will try to resolve it informally within 30 days.
For users in the United States: If informal resolution fails, you agree that any dispute will be resolved through binding individual arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association. You and FamilyStoryline each waive the right to participate in a class action, class arbitration or representative proceeding. Claims eligible for small claims court are exempt from this arbitration requirement.
For users outside the United States: If informal resolution fails, disputes will be resolved in the courts described in Section 17, unless your local law requires a different forum.
17. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
Nothing in these Terms overrides mandatory consumer protection rights in your country of residence that cannot be waived by contract.
18. Severability
If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining parts remain in full effect.
19. Changes to these Terms
FamilyStoryline may update these Terms as the service develops. We will notify users of material changes through the app or by email. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
